Enterprising Ideas

Students and professor brainstorming
A gift from Barry Eggers ’85 gives exciting opportunities to UCLA students with entrepreneurial ambitions.

UCLA embraces entrepreneurial education, so much so that in 2014 Forbes magazine ranked UCLA fifth among the nation’s leading entrepreneurial colleges. Many of our smart, ambitious students are eager to transform their ideas into successful business ventures that benefit the world. One alumnus who did just that is helping provide entrepreneurial opportunities for other Bruins.

With a gift of $120,000, Barry Eggers ’85, founder and managing director of Lightspeed Venture Partners, has created the Barry and Meredith Eggers Entrepreneurial Seed Funding Prize to be awarded to a UCLA startup company. Eligible prizewinners include startup ventures developed by UCLA students and by those who graduated within the past three years.

Entrepreneurship programs teach discipline, teamwork, and creativity in and out of the classroom. They also introduce students early on to think about how their academic pursuits can translate into personal and societal gains.

“It gives me great satisfaction to know that I am playing a vital role in advancing UCLA’s mission of research, education, and public service,” says Eggers.
